Below is the updated simple summary for our area as of 5/27 at 13:30 from NWS.

 

There are five counties (Coffee, Dale Geneva, Henry, and Houston)  in Southeast Alabama that are now under the Tropical Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service. Alberto is slowly strengthening and now has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The NWS is expecting some additional strengthening. Alberto may turn to the northwest this evening, but is still forecasted to turn back to the north into the early morning hours. We should expect sustained winds at 25 to 30 mph, and tropical storm force gusts at 40 to 45 mph.

 

The wiregrass area (Coffee, Dale Geneva, Henry, and Houston) is still under a flash flood watch. We are expecting periods of heavy rainfall from late this evening through Tuesday morning. The rainfall totals will be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. A severe weather threat, including tornadoes, is anticipated this evening and will continue throughout the day tomorrow. Even with the tornado threat, the primary concern is heavy rainfall, which can cause flash flooding.

 

As a reminder, when dealing with Tropical Storms/Hurricanes, there are sometimes breaks in between rain bands and there will be periods of dry air. That will occur during Alberto as well. Please remain vigilant.
