COLUMBIA: At 3:06 PM Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatched Columbia Fire to an outdoor fire on Bill Yance Road off Highway 52 East. This was a call the originated on Thursday afternoon late of a “controlled” burn that became a “uncontrolled” burn.
Columbia Fire responded with Columbia Fireman Daniel Forrester being command. Shortly after arrival Columbia called for the assistance of Webb Fire And they responded.
After units were on the scene a few Alabama Forestry was called to the scene and Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management Director Chris Judah.
The wind gusts made the fire “whip” across the road and spread. Houston County Sheriff Deputies were called to the scene to block and control traffic on Bill Yance Road due to zero visibility due to the smoke.
The high winds of 17 to 25 MPH caused the spreading of the fire. On Thursday when the fire was initiated to burn 100 acres the conditions were fine. But the wind caused it then to spread.
Today with the help of the two UNPAID PROFESSIONAL FIRE Departments and Alabama Forestry and EMA hopefully the fire is underway to being totally under control. Forestry had already cut some fire breaks but cut more today.
