HOUSTON COUNTY:   5:48 AM.  A few minutes ago Houston County Sheriff Deputies were involved in a pursuit.

When I joined listening to the chase the vehicle was northbound on Brannon Stand Road. The vehicle turned right on Murphy Mill Road. It traveled to John D. Odom Road to Highway 231 North.

The vehicle, a green Kawasaki motorcycle with the rider wearing a gray jacket, then turned north on Highway 231.

The motorcycle traveled north on Highway 231 North with Houston County Sheriff Deputy in pursuit. The deputy reported light traffic as the chase progressed.

The radio on the Houston County Sheriff Deputy was unable to transmit so the Deputy had to then begin calling the pursit through Dothan Police Primary on a entire different radio system.

As the unit approached Ozark and Ozark Police intercepted the chase. As the motorcycle approached Union Avenue at Giland Chevrolet the motorcycle turned north on Union Avenue. The chase was then taken over by Ozark Police.

The motorcycle went through downtown Ozark. The motorcycle then turned north and ended up back on Highway 231 Southbound. The motorcycle was last seen on Highway 231, southbound passing the Marathon at McDonald’s.

Ozark Police lost the visual sighting and the chase was terminated.

The reason for the pursuit is unknown at this time.

NOTE:   Sometime later I will go into detail. The Houston County Sheriff Department and the Houston County Commission have been working on a new radio system for the Houston County Sheriff Department and Houston County Volunteer Fire - Rescue. The current system is awful.

Lawyers involved in the project declared the radio system a “public works project” which has caused delays after delays. The Alabama Attorney General did not deem the radio system a “safety and security” issue and advised Houston County to continue the project as a “public works” project.

The Houston County Volunteer Fire voted in November to begin paying a private vendor $ 1,900.00 a month for their system because the radio system is in such poor condition.

The current system is so bad it will not talk from West Main and Ross Clark Circle where some 44,000 cars a day pass according to ALDOT records.

The Alabama Attorney General Office ( Steve Marshall’s tenure ) does not declare this a safety and security issue. That is because he does not care about the safety of law enforcement, fire and rescue safety.

Houston County Sheriff 911 dispatches for some 168 deputies and correctional officers, for Kinsey - Webb - Columbia - Gordon - Ashford - Cottonwood and Taylor Police Departments, for 17 volunteer fire departments - Columbia, Gordon, Pansey, Lucy, Ashford, Cowarts, Cottonwood, Webb, Kinsey, Lovetown, Hodgesville, Madrid, Rehobeth, Southern Junction, Taylor, Bay Springs, and Wicksburg: 5 Volunteer EMS units - Ashford, Columbia, Cottonwood, Rehobeth, Wicksburg: two search and rescue units - Houston County Rescue and Regional Land and Water: and often times Alabama Department of Law Enforcement - State Troopers use the Houston County Sheriff radio. But it is not a safety and security issue when the current system sucks and going to get someone killed.

This is no fault of the Sheriff or the County Commission. It is the Alabama Attorney General Office and lawyers Fault.

More on this issue later.
