Governor Ivey has issued a State of Emergency effective at 06:00 am Sunday, May 27, 2018, for the following counties in Alabama, Autauga, Baldwin, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Butler, Chambers, Chilton, Choctaw, Clarke, Coffee, Conecuh, Coosa, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Escambia, Geneva, Greene, Hale, Henry, Houston, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Sumter, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Washington and Wilcox, in preparation for Subtropical Storm Alberto. According to the NWS, Alberto will soon become a strong Tropical Storm with winds of 50 – 55 mph by tomorrow morning. For the wiregrass area, the wind threat is increasing. We should expect tropical storm force gusts only (at this time) up to 40 to 45 mph. The rainfall totals will be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches.
The wiregrass area (Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry, and Houston) is under a flash flood watch from now until 08:00 hours on Tuesday. There is a moderate flood threat for our area. Severe weather threat, including tornadoes, is anticipated on Sunday afternoon and continue throughout the day on Monday. Even with the tornado threat, the primary concern is heavy rainfall, which can cause flash flooding.
At this time, the NWS still has some uncertainty with whether the storm is going to take the northwestward turn. The tract for Alberto continues to shift eastward. As always, we will know more later. The next weather briefing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 08:30 central.
