The National Memorial For Peace And Justice in Montgomery recognizes 4000 blacks that were lynched and tortured in America after 7 decades following the Civil War.

Wesley Johnson from Tumbleton, Al was one of the 4000 blacks who were left hanging from a tree limb to send a message to the black community.

Wesley who was 19 years old was lynched from the Henry County Jail in 1937 and taken back to Tumbleton where he was shot over a hundred times and then left hanging from a tree limb for 3 days.

Wesley was buried in a unmarked grave for fear that the mob would dig him back up and drag his body around to put more fear into the local black community.

The Governor Of Alabama sent the Attorney General down to get indictments on the Sheriff and others who were allegedly involved in the murder of Wesley.
They were all found NOT GUILTY. You can read about the court proceedings by googling Wesley Johnson Lynching.

Having relatives from Henry County I learned about the lynching several years ago and it made me sick then and it still does to this day.

After a few years of looking for his resting place I finally found it with the help of family members.

I told them that I wanted to place a headstone on his grave ...that 80 years was 80 years too many to be buried in a unmarked grave. At first they were somewhat skeptical which I certainly didn’t blame them. I would be too!!

“ After a white mob killed him 80 years ago why would a white man who never knew him or any of his family want to give him a headstone? “

I told them the honest truth...
I didn’t honestly know why. It’s bothered me ever since I was told about it and I felt a strong connection to Wesley. He was the son of a loving mother and father, a loving brother to his siblings and a great friend to all that knew him. He didn’t deserve to be in a unmarked grave.

After there approval I ordered Wesley a headstone and now a 19 year old child is no longer in a unmarked grave.

Even if it took 80 years❤️❤️

Thanks to all who helped make this possible

Thank You James Johnson For Your Friendship
