ALABAMA:
In the last four days, two Alabama State Troopers have been hit inside their parked patrol units along the interstate in Tuscaloosa.
Local first responders are begging motorists to be more alert and follow the Move Over law. The law has been enforced since 2010 and required motorists to move into an available lane away from emergency vehicles using their emergency signals. If motorists are unable to safely change lanes, they are supposed to slow down to a reasonable speed.
“Each year hundreds of people are injured or killed by passing motorists while working alongside the nations highways,” said Senior Trooper Reginal King with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
The first collision happened just before 3 a.m. on Feb. 14 on I-59 Northbound at exit 73, the McFarland Boulevard exit. The accident report shows a tractor-trailer plowed into a state trooper who was inside his car working construction detail. The trooper was taken to the hospital.
“It only takes a split second for a driver to take his eyes of the roadway,” King said.
