A 71-year-old south Lee County, Fla., woman suffered arm and leg injuries after she was bitten by a 10-foot-plus alligator on Sunday afternoon in a gated community.
"We arrived to find a female patient, age 71, with injuries to her extremities from an alligator bite," said Alexis Rothring, spokeswoman for the San Carlos Park Fire Protection and Rescue Service District. "She was transported as a trauma alert by Lee Flight."
The woman was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.
San Carlos Park fire units were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. to respond to an animal bite/attack in the Shadow Wood Preserve gated development.
Brian Norris, a Florida Fish and Wildlife officer in Southwest Florida, said a trapper called to the site captured the 10-foot, 5-inch alligator. The gator will be killed, Norris said.
There have been two other attacks in Southwest Florida in the past week.
An attack on the Peace River in Arcadia injured the leg of a 10-year-old boy and a 51-year-old man was bitten on the arm while diving for golf balls in Rotonda West in Charlotte County.
