On 12/16/2018 at approximately 7:46 P.M. the Marianna Police Department received a report of an altercation between a male and female at the Three River’s Apartment Complex. Upon officers arrival they located several subjects standing in the area where the altercation was reported to have occurred.
Contact was made with one subject, later identified as Charles Peterson Jr. Peterson stated to officers that the two individuals which were involved had just left the area on foot and even gave a direction of travel. Officers then attempted to locate the couple, but was unable to do so.
At approximately 8:46 P.M. contact was made with officers who were still in the area of the apartment complex, by Shayla Barber. Barber reported that she was involved in the disturbance which had been reported at the complex.
Barber explained that her child’s father had arrived at her apartment earlier in the afternoon and began to attack her because she had spent money on Christmas presents instead of giving the money to him. Barber stated that over the course of a couple hours, her child’s father held her and her juvenile brother captive inside the apartment while he continued to batter her, and at one point strangled her.
During this time, her juvenile brother attempted to defend her, but was pushed into the wall by her child’s father. When asked why Barber did not call for help, she replied that during the incident her child’s father had obtained her phone and refused to give it back. When asked for the identity of the suspect, Barber identified him as Charles Peterson Jr., the subject which officers first made contact with.
Barber even stated that when officers first arrived in front of her apartment, she was hiding inside, and was scared to call out for help. When asked why, Barber stated that Peterson told her that if she said anything to the police he would kill their child. While speaking with Barber officers noticed significant bruising and lacerations to her face and neck, consistent with her statement.
Upon receiving this information, officers quickly located Peterson at D building of the complex. Peterson was very intoxicated upon contact. Peterson was then placed under arrest. While attempting to place Peterson into custody, he became combative, and actually spit in the face of one officer, while make threats to kill the officers.
While in route to the jail, Peterson began asking the arresting officer where he resided and stated to him the he would find out and “take care” of him and his family. Peterson continuously stated to the officer, “I’ll get you” and “I got you.”
Charles Peterson Jr. was turned over to Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
