The Alabama Rural Electric Association has awarded its 2019 Chairman’s Award to Nolan Laird, longtime board member at Wiregrass Electric Cooperative. The Chairman’s Award is presented for extraordinary service on behalf of the electric cooperatives of Alabama. Laird received the award April 11 at the AREA Annual Meeting in Montgomery.

Laird recently retired from the Wiregrass Electric Cooperative board after 33 years. During his tenure from 1984 through 2017, he was instrumental in providing advice and support for four different general managers, and led the effort to bring bucket trucks and digger derricks, first to the construction crews, and then to the servicemen.  He pushed for the improvement of vegetation management and led efforts to build a state-of-the-art headquarters facility in 2004.  Later he promoted a call center and member service center in West Dothan, within miles of 70 percent of co-op members.  Finally, representing the farthermost west end and least dense area of the co-op territory, he led efforts to build a new district office in Samson, with cashiers,  24-hour kiosk, and member drive-through to serve the members of his district with cashiers, servicemen and warehouse materials.

Laird supported management’s efforts to use technology to work more safely, more productively, lower line loss, and make the co-op easier to do business with.  Technology improvements during his tenure include AMI smart meters in 2007,  prepay in 2009, 24-hour kiosks in all four offices,  and SCADA control of substations and down-line devices for segmenting outages remotely from a state-of-the-art Dispatch Center added in 2015.
