Brownfields Assessment Project: Public Meeting

The City of Dothan will hold a public meeting at 1:00 pm on October 18, 2017 in the Board Room located on the 2nd floor of the Civic Center, ARENA SIDE at 126 North St. Andrews Street for the purpose of initiating the City’s Brownfields Assessment Project. The project Steering Committee will be joined by EPA Region 4 Brownfields Coordinator Barbara Alfano and Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) Redevelopment Section Chief, Sonja Favors.  The City’s project consultant, PPM, Inc., will conduct an overview of the brownfields inventory and other project actions projected for the fourth Quarter of 2017.

In December of 2016, the City of Dothan applied for a US EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant. On June 2, 2017, US EPA announced that Dothan’s brownfields application was approved in the amount of $300,000.  Funds are to be utilized as follows: $150,000 to be applied to petroleum assessments and $150,000 to be applied to other hazardous substances assessments. The City has up to three years to complete the brownfields assessment project.

Brownfields are defined as “real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” The Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act, and Brownfields Law provides funding for the EPA Brownfields Program.
