Burglary Call Lands One in Jail

On November 11, 2018, a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office Uniform Patrol Division responded to storage units on Highway 71 North. This response was in reference to a report of multiple units being burglarized. The complainant advised the arriving deputy that their storage unit had been broken in to. The complainant supplied the deputy with a list of known items that had been removed from the storage unit.
Entry into the unit was made through the rear of the building. Property was taken and the Suspect(s) exited out of the same area. The suspect(s) also gained access to other storage units in the same building.
During the course of the investigation, suspect information was developed. Deputies arrived at the location on Harper Street and made contact with the resident Kevin Smith. Consent to search the residence for the suspect and stolen property was given.
Upon searching the residence, the property stolen from the storage unit was located inside a bedroom. The primary user of the bedroom was present during this search. The primary user of the bedroom was identified as Kevin Smith, 36, of Marianna.
Smith was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance. This incident is still under investigation pending notification of the other storage unit tenants. Other charges are pending.
