Burglary Call Lands Two Juveniles in Jail

On January 4^th, 2018 at approximately 12:55pm, the Marianna Police Department responded to 4400 Block of Putnam Street in reference to a possible residential burglary. A concerned citizen of Marianna contacted the police department stating there was a white male subject, knocking on the doors of several residences, and if no answer is received, he would go to the rear of the residence.

 

            The alert citizen observed the subject walk to the residence and walk around it. Officers arrived at the residence and found an unsecured door. Officers made entry into the unsecured residence in an attempt to determine if the suspect entered the residence. During the officer’s safety sweep of the residence, officers located a white male subject that matched the description that the citizen gave police.

 

            It was determined that the subject did not reside at the residence and none of the residents were at the home at the time. The subject was found to be in possession of loose change and an empty backpack. After speaking with residents of the home, it was determined that the loose change found on the subject was indeed from inside the residence. The subject, David Zane Smith, was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Dwelling and Petit Theft.

 

            Upon the conclusion of the arrest, investigators learned of new information that tied Smith to another residential burglary that occurred in the 2900 Block of Wynn Street. This residential burglary occurred on December 21^st, 2017 and several firearms and a gaming console were taken.

 

            Investigators obtained information that identified another suspect as Kiley Sellers. Through lengthy interviews and witness statements, investigators received information that one of the stolen guns was in an RV located off of Florence Drive. Investigators followed up on the information and located the registered owner of the RV. Investigators obtained consent to search the RV and during the search, located one of the stolen guns inside the RV.

 

            Continuing to gather statements and further leads in the investigation, investigators were able to prove that David Zane Smith and Kiley Sellers committed the burglary at the residence on Wynn Street. Investigators discovered that Smith and Sellers entered the residence through a side door. After gaining entry into the residence, Smith and Sellers grabbed one of the guns, a gun safe, and a gaming console.

 

            After committing the burglary, Smith and Sellers took the gun safe to another location where they cut the safe open, obtaining a handgun. Smith and Sellers then set up a deal to trade the stolen pistol for a quantity of narcotics.

 

            Based on the information obtained in this investigation, warrants charging Smith and Sellers with Armed Burglary, Grand Theft of a Firearm (2 Counts), Grand Theft, and Dealing in Stolen Property were applied for and granted. On January 5^th, 2018 Sellers was arrested at his residence on Wynn Street. On this same date, Smith turned himself into police at the Marianna Police Department.

 

            Due to Smith and Sellers being juveniles, both were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Bay County, Florida.

 

            Chief Hayes Baggett and the Marianna Police Department would like to thank the alert and concerned citizen that called police about the suspicious activity. With the citizen’s effort, we were able to bring these cases to a close and recover stolen property. Remember, if you see something, say something.
