COLUMBIA: The Town of Columbia Police Chief Shad Floyd placed Columbia Police Officer Allen Sassnet on administrative leave pending an investigation into a complaint.
Columbia has been embroiled with controversy since SARCOA ( Southeast Alabama Regional Council on Aging ) sent them a letter. The letter contained allegations the Columbia Senior Citizens Center forged some 900 signatures in order to receive "federal" funding.
Columbia Mayor Lanny Lancaster's wife was the manager of the Senior Citizens Center.
Those actions have divided, well not divided because it appears the majority of the Columbia citizens want Mayor Lancaster to resign.
With that division, from credible sources within the bowels of the City of Columbia, Officer Sassnet was on the opposite side of the Mayor in this issue.
Officer Sassnet worked. You never hear Columbia Police Chief Shad Floyd work. But Chief Floyd put Sassnet on Administrative Leave.
From sources UNCONFIRMED BY MAYOR LANCASTER AND CHIEF FLOYD, Sassnet apparently went to an employer and passed on information he had that their employee could be involved in some illegal prescription drugs. A complaint was filed and resulted in the administrative leave.
No actions have been taken against Chief Floyd for his turning off the lights in a meeting, creating a safety hazard, where a lady fell and was injured.
Sassnet did not wait on the investigation or action from the Town of Columbia. He resigned and begins the first of the month as a Headland Police Officer.
In the meantime we wait to see if SARCOA and Houston County Sheriff Department or the FBI ( since federal funds ) conduct an investigation.
Until then Lancaster remains Mayor and in control. Council Member Rhonda Freeman, Addie Buze and Charlie Lane march to the drum that Lancaster beats. And Floyd continues to be the Chief of Police.
