We are Concerned Citizens for Change of Barbour County Schools. We are a committee advocating for the parents, teachers, and most importantly students of the Barbour County School District. We are working to remedy the numerous issues within the district.

•The high school only has 1 certified math teacher. 2 math teacher positions are vacant and the jobs weren't posted on the Alabama Dept. Of Education website until Dec. 3rd, 2018.

•There isn't a certified teacher in the Resource room at the Intermediate School.

•The teachers are being abused both verbally and physically. Students are hitting teachers to the point of leaving bruises, throwing food at teachers, and cursing at them.

•The new reading program, Journeys, began at the start of the school year. The teachers only received a one day overview and no further training.

•Chromebooks are used in all classrooms and many teachers haven't been trained as to how to implement them as a resource.

•There is no longer a Resource Officer on campus at Barbour County High School because the contract wasn't renewed.

•The superintendent and many board members will not allow community stakeholders to be involved.

•There are many apparent inaccuracies in the financial documents and reports.

•There is a high turn over rate. Teachers leave because there isn't classroom support. Teachers are also intimidated by administration and President of the Board.

•Principals aren't able to run their schools. They aren't allowed to hire personnel and sometimes aren't involved in the hiring process whatsoever.

•The new In School Suspension (ISS) only has 15 slots. All students from kindergarten through 12th grade are in the same ISS together. If a school has more than 5 students in ISS no more students can be placed until a student in ISS goes back to his/her school.

•Only certain people are allowed to be substitutes.  Currents substitutes sit and play on their cellphones and curse in front of the students.

•President of the Board, Mrs. Shirley Johnson, is extremely unprofessional. She belittles other board members in front of the public if he/she disagrees with her. She denies people on the agenda to speak for the amount of time that was agreed upon by the superintendent. She bangs the gavel and yells at people that he/she is out of order. She has been rude to parents and teachers at the schools.

In order to remedy the issues presented above and become an effective district, the following changes need to occur:

•Hire 2 certified math teachers for the high school.

•Place a certified teacher in the Resource room at the Intermediate School.

•Implement a firm discipline plan to bring order back into the classrooms.

•Provide the teachers on-going training on the Journeys reading program.

•Train the teachers to utilize the Chromebooks as an effective classroom resource.

•Renew the contract to have a Resource Officer back on campus.

•Pledge transparency and allow community stakeholders to be involved.

•Have a thorough financial audit.

•Create a school culture that makes teachers want to come and stay in our district.

•Allow principal's to run their schools and participate in or hire their personnel.

•Create at least one additional ISS and utilize it immediately when necessary.

•Train substitutes so they can be effective in classrooms.

•Remove President of the Board for creating a hostile and unproductive culture in the district!
