On February 9, 2019, a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was on routine patrol in the area of Alford, Florida when he observed a male subject, and knew him to be Michael Barnes, from prior incidents. A check of Barnes’ information through NCIC/FCIC returned he did not possess a valid driver’s license out of Florida due to a suspension. During this check it was also learned Barnes was currently on State Probation House Arrest with the stipulation of remaining confined to a residence.

As the vehicle being driven by Barnes pulled from a parking lot onto the highway the Deputy got behind the vehicle and conducted a probable cause traffic stop. The vehicle came to a stop and Barnes quickly exited the vehicle and placed both hands into his pants pockets. Barnes was given several lawful commands to slowly remove his hands from his pants pockets. Barnes continued to ignore these commands and was eventually made to sit on the ground where he removed his hands.

Once the Deputy was able to approach safely and make contact with Barnes he was explained the reason for the stop and detained due to his actions and movements within his pockets. A patted down for officer safety purposes was conducted and a large bulge was felt within a front pants pocket. The item was removed and determined to be a pill bottle. The Deputy found it to contain several plastic baggies containing a crystal like substance suspected to be methamphetamine.

A probable cause search of the vehicle driven by Barnes was conducted and the Deputy located several items within consistent with the illicit drug trade. Those items included a unlabeled pill bottle containing more crystal like substance, a partially smoked marijuana cigarette, digital scales, a plastic baggie of suspected marijuana, two plastic baggies containing prescription drugs suspected to be oxycodone and alprazolam, glass smoking pipes with some containing suspected methamphetamine residue, and fifteen individually packaged jewelry style ziplock baggies containing suspected methamphetamine. Additionally, Barnes was found to have a large amount of U.S. currency on his person  in sequential bills which is consistent with the sale/distribution of narcotics.

Field testing of the suspected methamphetamine did yield a presumptive positive result for the presence of methamphetamine. The total unpackaged weight of the suspected methamphetamine was approximately 57.4 grams. Barnes was ultimately placed under arrest and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance on his charges.
