DOTHAN - Two Dothan men are accused of scheming a supermarket with counterfeit money. Devonte Jermez Smith (23), was arrested Wednesday on 12 felony counts of Possessing a Forged Instrument.
Dothan Police Investigator Terry Nelson said Smith conspired with an employee of Shur-Value Foods to convert counterfeit 20 dollar bills into legitimate cash over time. The employee, Darius Butler (23), was arrested August 4 on very similar charges.
“We believe Smith and Butler worked together in the scheme. Our investigation revealed Smith made 12 small purchases July 31 with fraudulent $20 bills and Butler gave him change,” Nelson said.
He also has a stiff warning for merchants. “We’re seeing a growing number of counterfeit bills circulating, mostly 20’s and 100’s, so we need people to be extra vigilant in checking the authenticity of money that’s used at their business.”
Nelson said it’s not known where the bogus bill allegedly used by Butler and Smith were obtained or if they were used at other merchants.
