HOUSTON COUNTY: A jury of 12 peers found Gary Ladon Godwin Not Guilty of Assault in the second degree.
Houston County Sheriff Investigator Robinson arrested Gary Ladon Godwin on October 16, 2017 for Assault in the first degree. The assault, from a .45 caliber handgun, was alleged to have been used by Godwin on State Line Road near Highway 231 South at a club.
The victim that was shot was a Campbellton Florida man.
On March 15, 2018 a Houston County Grand Jury indicted Godwin of a lesser offense, Assault in the Second Degree.
On Wednesday the trial on Godwin kicked off before 20th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Larry Anderson. Godwin was represented by Defense Attorney Cada Carter.
The defense focus was a stand your ground defense. Carter said that Godwin was in fear of his life or the life of others which resulted in his use of a firearm for protection.
The jury of 12 agreed with Carter and found Gary Ladon Godwin Not Guilty.
Tomorrow or over the weekend we will focus on all of the cases this week that were on the Criminal Trial Docket and results of those cases. While we have focused on the one Guilty and those not guilty, there were guilty pleas, guilty verdicts and pretrial diversions on cases.
We have good law enforcement and they do a good job. So the COURTWATCH focus of the not guilty cases is no reflection on the quality of law enforcement.
But if a person was listed as arrested and the case was dismissed or found not guilty, that person deserves the same publicity for the dismissal or not guilty they got when they were arrested.
