DALE COUNTY: Dale Medical Center like Southeast Alabama Medical Center punted the Coroner from the use of the morgue.
Dale County Commission Chairman Mark Blakenship and members of the Dale County Commission started work on the issue.
Dale County Commission purchased a trailer and equipped that trailer for use of a morgue for the Dale County Coroner.
By the purchase of the trailer rather than a stationary morgue it can also serve as a portable morgue in the event of a scene where multiple deaths occur.
Recently in the City of Dothan but in Dale County three people were killed in a motor vehicle accident. Dale County Coroner Hildboldt did not have a way to transport the three victims whose lives were claimed. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd assisted and transported the bodies.
With the mobile morgue unit it will allow the respectful handling of bodies when multiple people have lives claimed in some type of incident.
Houston County, through Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management and SAMC has a portable morgue. The trailer is a Mass Casualty Incident Trailer. This trailer is designed to be a portable morgue and will probably be the morgue for the Houston County Coroner in the future.
The commissions and Coroner want to make sure the integrity is maintained in the handling of persons who have passed away. Often times a body has to be placed in the morgue until which time family can be notified and decisions made of what funeral home they want to handle funeral services and/or cremation services.
