DOTHAN: Dothan Mayor Markk Saliba and members of the Dothan City Commission are set to appoint a new Public Works Director.
Long time Public Works Director ( City Engineer ) Jerry Corbin is retiring from the City of Dothan effective December 31, 2017.
Mayor Saliba and the commissioners are expected to appoint Charles Metzger as Public Works Director effective January 1, 2018. Metzger is currently with the City of Dothan. He is expected to begin with a salary of $ 132,040.48.
Dothan City Manager Mike West, under the Mayor/Commission/City Manager form of government interviews and makes a decision. The City Manager then makes a recommendation to the Mayor and Commission. They can thumbs up or thumbs down the recommendation.
Metzger should sail on through the process.
Dothan City Manager Mike West normally starts a new department head, if already employed with the City of Dothan with a 10% bump in their current salary. It is not known what Metzger is currently making.
Corbin retires after serving several stints as Acting City Manager. He served through some controversial times in the City of Dothan.
Many around Dothan feel that Dothan City Manager Mike West is in the short rows until he retires. During former Dothan Mayor Alfred Saliba ( current Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba's dad ) tenure as Mayor he served as Acting City Manager.
Since that time some unwise leadership have felt a department head should serve as Acting City Manager. That being said when West does announce his retirement and a Acting City Manager should be appointed Mayor Mark Saliba would be a good choice.
Dothan has no City Manager in waiting position. Someone should be in training if they know that West will be retiring in the future. But, that would be wise decision.
