Dothan FIre Chief Names New Deputy Chief

DOTHAN:     Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams has named Fire Marshall/Batallion Chief Chris Etheridge as the new Deputy Chief of Dothan Fire Department.


The Deputy Fire Chief Position will operate directly under the Fire Chief and command the entire Dothan Fire Department.


This position is a newly created position within the Dothan Fire Department. Williams, who was just recognized by Dothan City Manager Mike West, Mayor Saliba and the Dothan Commission, for completing 30 years with Dothan Fire Department. Of those 30 years Williams has been Dothan's Top Fireman for 11 years.


With the creation of the Deputy Fire Chief, Etheridge will be over the entire 175 plus members of the Dothan Fire Department.


Dothan Fire currently has 9 fire stations: Central - Station 1 on Columbia Highway: Eastside - Station 5 on the eastside of Ross Clark Circle: Southside - Station 4 on the southside near Cottonwood Road: Station 2 - Lakewood on South Park across from Selma Baptist Church behind the cemetery: Station 8 - The Highlands on 84 West at the entrance to the Highlands: Station 6 - On Napier Field Road just off Highway 231 North: Station 9 - Technology Drive off Westgate Parkway and Headland Avenue.


Each Dothan Fire Station has a Captain that rules the roost of each fire station. The command structure is then a Sergeant which normally drives the fire engine. Then the fireman.


Over the Captain Dothan Fire operates two Batallion Chief's. They drive the Ford Expedition or Tahoe. The Batallion Chief's currently work directly under the Fire Chief, report to the Fire Chief, and are over each man and woman on duty.


In addition to the Fire Stations there is a Fire Marshall Division.


With the change of the Deputy Chief positon, all of these positions will now report to the Deputy Chief.


Salaries have been a issue in the recruitment of Dothan Fireman. Under Mike West tenure as City Manager several factors have been changed which has hurt the recruitment of good qualified candidates.
