DOTHAN:    This past week Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba, Dothan School Board Chairman Mike Schmitz and Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish took a trip to Washington D.C.

The purpose of the trip was to meet with United States Senators and Representatives about funding for school safety.

Number one on Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba, Dothan School Chairman Mike Schmitz and Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish agenda to accomplish is, School Resource Law Enforcement Officers in the Dothan City Schools.

The meetings were great contacts but did not produce dollars.

Currently the Dothan Police Department and Dothan Board of Education have 8 School Resource Law Enforcement Officers. The need is for 19 law enforcement officers to manage the safety and security of the schools.

Following the Washington D.C. meetings, Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba directed Dothan City Manager Mike West to place the following item on the agenda of the Dothan City Commission for this Tuesday, July 17, 2018:

Amending Resolution 2015-217, an agreement with the Dothan City Board of Education, which funds up to eight full-time police officers assigned as School Resources. The new agreement will provide School Resource Officers and School Protection Officers to the Dothan City Schools subject to availability of annual funding, shared funding by the Dothan City Board of Education and/or receiving grant subsidy, and appropriating funds for said officers.

The primary duty of the School Resource Officers will be the safeguarding of the students, faculty and facilities. These positions will be part time and considered Dothan Police Reserve Officers. The positions demand the officer to certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of Alabama.

The salaries will be paid 50% by the Dothan Board of Education and 50% by the City of Dothan. The officers will be part time employees of the Dothan Police Department and not the Dothan Board of Education. The officers will operate under the command of Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish.

Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba's number one priority is the safety and security of the most precious resources, children.

Mayor Saliba is committed, as is the Dothan City Commissioners, Dothan School Board Chairman Mike Schmitz and the Dothan Board of Education in partnership with Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish to the make the Dothan City Schools safe and secure.

This item is expected to pass on Tuesday. While the agreement states when funding available, Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba is determined to make it happen. And he  has put his foot down to get this item on the fast track and accomplished.

THANKS Mayor Saliba, Chairman Schmitz and Chief Parrish for your work and diligence to make this happen.
