DOTHAN: August 20th, Dothan City School Superintendent, Dr. Phyllis Edwards presented a plan for the reorganization and reconfiguration of the Dothan City Schools (DCS) to the DCS Board of Education during a work session on August 16, 2018. The process, which will be followed over the next two months, includes two community forms to seek input in round table discussions; additional board work sessions and two listening sessions in September to allow the board to hear from the community, teachers and parents.

Edwards developed a detailed plan with several options and three decision points for the board. No decision is expected until late October or early November. The plan is posted at https://www.dothan .k12.us/

The public can submit questions on the website and will also be able to log their choice on an upcoming survey.

This is an Open and Transparent process. The fact is the budge, which is 70% funded through the state, cannot continue to support the school functions and also provide the best possible education for our children.

It is belief that the Dothan City School System can become one of the best systems in the state and the nation. We must have high expectations for all of our students and provide a world-class education at every school facility.

They believe this is a crisis point for the school system. We will either band together to make necessary changes to save this public school system or we will remain status quo and continue a downward spiral. Edwards thinks most people in Dothan believe in necessity and power of public school education. We in the organization must do our best everyday to reach the students and create lifelong learners.

The community’s support to move forward and support a bold change is necessary. Edwards’s hopes everyone will assist by supporting their board members make their voices heard in a civil manner and be willing to think outside of the usual parameters. If we want to make a different outcome, it takes different action.
