Dothan, Alabama. On May 31, 2017, Dothan was formally notified that their application for a US EPA Brownfield’s Assessment Grant was approved. According to Mayor Schmitz, “Dothan is honored to be selected as a recipient of the US EPA’s Environmental Assessment Grant Program”.
For the past two years, the city has worked diligently in pursuit of a vision for achieving environmental mitigation and equity for properties long overlooked as potential assets and income producing properties for the neighborhoods impacted by those sites. Developing and refining a winning Brownfields project proposal has resulted in good timing for Dothan.
The City’s historic Howell School is a brownfields site identified in the grant application and is poised for restoration and redevelopment into a senior housing development. EPA Assessment funds will serve as important leveraging for the project which will also deliver job opportunities for those living in disadvantaged neighborhoods proximate to the site.
With the prospects of a Smart Growth Project on the Hwy 84 East Corridor, we anticipate the potential for leveraging best practices, implementation funding, and other mutual benefits for strengthening the causes of Brownfields and Smart Growth for Dothan, Alabama.“
