DOTHAN UTILITIES OFFERS TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR

PLUMBING DURING COLD WEATHER

Dothan is anticipating below-freezing temperatures for Tuesday, January 29 th , and Dothan
City Utilities has some suggestions for protecting your pipes. According to Lindsay
McDonald, P.E. with Dothan Utilities, being weather wise and using common sense can save
time and money and extend the life of your plumbing. “The expansion of water as it freezes
can put stress on pipe materials, resulting in pipe bursts that can cause inconvenient and costly
damage to property. For that reason, it is important to prepare your home for the approaching
sub-freezing weather.” The following suggestions can help you avoid such unscheduled,
expensive plumbing repairs:
 Wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of the home
 Remove garden hoses from outside faucets. Insulate outside faucets with Styrofoam
cover, rags or paper
 Cover vents around the foundation of your home
 Know where your cut-off valve is located and how to use it.
 Allow for a very slow, steady drip on outside faucets. This is not necessary unless
temperatures are expected to be 28 degrees or below for at least 4 hours (Be sure to
turn off faucets after the threat of freezing weather)

According to the current forecast, Dothan will experience below-freezing temperatures for 4-6
hours. Please take the necessary precautions to keep your home safe, warm and dry.
