LEE COUNTY: The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call today about 1:26 AM of a house fire in the 100 block of Lee Road 750, in Salem. Upon arrival by Salem Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Lee County Deputies, they found a residence well involved.
Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters found 66-year-old Woodrow Turner, in a back bedroom of his residence. Turner lived alone. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Turner dead at the scene. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
It is believed that Turner died from smoke and heat inhalation before the fire reached the bedroom he was found in. His body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office of the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination.
The State Fire Marshall’s office was called in to assist the Lee County Sheriff’s office in determining the cause of the fire. The case remains under investigation by the Lee County Coroner, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, State Fire Marshall’s office and the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences
