GENEVA COUNTY: Tony Helms has been with Geneva County Sheriff Department for more than 30 years. This January will complete his first term as Geneva County Sheriff and he will be sworn in for his second term.
When Chief Deputy, Tony Helms was one of the final officers to encounter a 25 mile active shooter. The active shooter started his reign of terror in Coffee County, entering Geneva County at Samson. The active shooter then made his way into Geneva. He opened fire on a Alabama State Trooper who was driving the opposite direction whi had no idea he was encountering a active shooter.
Then Chief Deputy Helms encountered him north of Geneva. As Helms rolled from his Tahoe a bullet went through the headrest where seconds before Helms was sitting. The gunman had Helms pinned putting more than 23 bullet holes in his Sheriff Department Tahoe.
The ending result was the gunman died.
Geneva County repaired the bullet holes in the Tahoe. Helms became Sheriff and continued to drive the Tahoe.
Last week Sheriff Tony Helms got his first new Sheriff Vehicle in 12 years. He has wore that Tahoe out.
Geneva County now has four Chevrolet Pickup trucks marked, complete with four wheel drive. Sheriff Helms also got a Chevrolet Pickup which is unmarked. Making the department 5 new Chevrolet four wheel drive trucks. And in Geneva County, they needed the four wheel drive trucks in the Sheriff Department. A major rural county with many dirt roads.
The four marked Chevrolet pickup trucks look sharp with the decals.
Congratulations to the Sheriff Department. That folks, in Geneva County, is MAJOR. To get 5 new vehicles in the Geneva County Sheriff Department is unheard of!
And replacing the Dodge Chargers....a good thing!
