Five Deaths In Dothan - Houston County on Thursday

DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:    On Thursday Law Enforcement - Fire and EMS had a busy day. There were five different deaths in Houston County on Thursday.

The Houston County Sheriff Department investigated three of the five and Dothan Police investigated two of the five. None were considered "foul play" deaths. Two were questionable circumstances and autopsies were ordered.

Because a number of years ago our local "leaders??" were asleep at the wheel they allowed Dothan - Houston County to lose the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Lab and Medical Examineer. That along with a dishonest Alabama Attorney General Bill Pryor ( I can back that statement up.)

For the past 46 years the morgue for the Coroner has been at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. The Southeast Alabama Medical Center receives tax dollars. When a body neended to the placed in the morgue until family notification or until transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for postmortem examination.

Now a member of the Sheriff Department or Police Department has to transport the body to Montgomery for autopsy.

There was a great system in place and this community was served well when the Medical Examiner and lab was in Dothan. But officials who were asleep and did not care, and lacked a backbone allowed us to lose the Forensic Lab.

People do not realize the importance until a death strikes.

Just recently the Coroner was notified that after August 1 he would not be allowed to place the bodies in the morgue at SAMC. That was because a body was reported to have been left in the morgue for two months. But the logs are missing from the morgue and no one knows if the body was a "hospital" death or a case of the Corner.

There have been meetings between Chairman Mark Culver, the Coroner, law enforcement and SAMC in an effort to resolve the issue.

No comments made about the problem, the body of two months left in the morgue or the potential solution.

NOTE:   SAMC receives tax dollars. I am Deputy Coroner in Henry County. While I do have to obey his directives, as former Houston County Coroner, my stand would be...if needed I will use the morgue at SAMC or would be arresting the person who refusing admittance for Inteferring With Governmental Operations and placing that person, Chairman of the Board and CEO in the Houston County Jail and let a Judge decide. Just saying, that is my position. And if you know me...that would happen.
