Pensacola, Fla. (WEAR) - The Pensacola Police Department (PPD) says five officers were taken to an area hospital as a precaution, after being exposed to a release of fentanyl Friday morning.

The circumstances aren't clear, but PPD says the officers volunteered to be checked out by doctors.

Hazmat crews were called in to clean up the fentanyl.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described the drug as, "a synthetic opioid pain reliever, approved for treating severe pain, typically advanced cancer pain."

It's 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Illegally made fentanyl is sold in the drug market for its heroin-like effects.
