Police have identified two of the five women — four employees and a customer — killed in Wednesday’s mass shooting at a Sebring bank, hours after accused gunman Zephen Xaver appeared in court for the first time.
Police Chief Karl Hoglund identified two of the victims as bank employee Marisol Lopez and customer Cyntha Watson.
The other three victims’ families requested their names be withheld under Marsy’s Law, the recently adopted victim-rights amendment to Florida’s Constitution, a request the police chief said he would honor. The three were all employees at the SunTrust, Hoglund said.
“It’s a time for us to come together,” said Hoglund, whose voice wavered with emotion at times during a Thursday morning press conference. “It’s a time for us to heal.”
Xaver, 21, was ordered held without bail on five counts of first-degree murder, according to local media reports. A judge appointed the public defender’s office to represent him. Authorities said they have found no connection between Xaver and the victims.
“We believe that it was a random act,” Hoglund said. “We do not believe that anybody was specifically targeted.”
