CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - A former assistant district attorney out of Chambers County was arrested Thursday on theft of property charges.
According to court documents, Roland Lewis Sledge was charged with two counts of theft of property in the first degree. The documents state that on two separate occasions, Feb. 11, 2016, and March 21, 2016, Sledge did "knowingly obtain or exert unauthorized control over" a bank account from Farmers and Merchants Bank belonging to a minor while acting as conservator of the account.
According to Chambers County district attorney Jeremy Duerr, about a month and a half previously he became aware that one of his assistant DAs was being looked at because he was a conservator for a minor's estate. Duerr said he asked Sledge about it and he confirmed he was engaging in private practice work while a full time employee at the district attorney's office. Duerr said he immediately terminated Sledge. Duerr said he then contacted the attorney general's office, which reached out to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to investigate.
