Former Gordon Mayor Elbert Melton Released From Jail Pending Appeal Of Conviction

HOUSTON COUNTY: Former Gordon Mayor Elbert Melton, Jr. was released on two appeal bonds on Wednesday.
20th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Kevin Moulton sentenced the former Mayor Wednesday morning. The sentence called for Melton to serve twelve months in custody as part of three year sentences.
Melton was taken into custody following the sentencing. The Houston County Sheriff Department transported Melton to the Houston County Jail.
Melton requested appeal bonds be set and appealed his case to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals/ Judge Moulton set $ 5,000.00 appeal bonds on each the cases a Houston County jury of 12 convicted him on.
Appeals bonds are made directly to the Circuit Clerk of Court. Melton made those appeal bonds.
About 4:30 PM on Wednesday Melton was released from the Houston County Jail. Unless Melton is to violate some condition of bond he will remain free on bond until he exhausts all appeal rights or the appeals court rules in his favor.
Melton was convicted on two counts of Voter Fraud. Upon his conviction Melton immediately vacated his position as Gordon Mayor.
