Nike made a bold move by signing a former professional athlete to be their spokesperson. This was a calculated business decision in which highly paid people put a lot of thought and research in to it—or did they? Some will say, “way to go Nike”. “I’m proud your company is standing up for freedom of expression—I’m buying Nike products as long as I can afford them.”

The next group are those that simply don’t care one way or the other as long as you don’t take their phone away. Don’t take their Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat away, and they’ll buy whatever they always buy or what mama and daddy buy for them.

The next group (which I find myself increasingly drawn toward but maybe not quite there yet) are those that have an increasing contempt for all thing Un-American. Surprisingly, I am not talking about the political “lines in the sand” between left and right.

Democrats, Republicans and Independents all have large numbers in their parties who love and respect this Country and its founding principles. Law and order, preservation of the Constitution, civil rights and the right to own a gun are all part of this groups belief system. In my opinion, this is where Nike made a miscalculation in their marketing scheme which lead them to a decision they will ultimately regret.

I’m a glass half-full kind of guy, but I believe there are America-loving Americans on all sides. How many of them don’t appreciate the message this marketing strategy conveys to so many “regular” people? In the end Nike is getting exposure and as long as we spell their name right, strategists will tell you they gain from it.

The final group and probably the majority are those like me. We love this Country; we serve this country; we appreciate those who serve and have served. We have respect and reverence for the sacrifices made to get us here. Our military, first responders and yes, even many politicians have helped make this Country the greatest in the history of the world.

This group doesn’t get vocal about all of the drama associated with this controversy or others that are sure to follow. We work every day, and we love God and our Country. We all spend money; we all vote; and when we say, “I’m done with Nike” we truly mean it.

So next September 11th, take time to kneel down for a moment of silence. While your down there, look at the back of your shoe and see what brand it is? Just do it...
