The government shutdown that started Saturday, Dec. 22 has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers on the job without a check while others wait to see how the impasse will be resolved and if they will be paid.
Thousands of Alabama workers have also been left waiting and wondering.
The departments of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, State, Interior, Agriculture, Treasury, Commerce, Homeland Security and Justice, as well as several independent agencies, have sharply curtailed operations during the shutdown.
The closures mean more than 340,000 government employees are currently on furlough without a guarantee of back pay; an additional 500,000 are working but won’t be paid until the shutdown ends. Those numbers are expected to grow as the impasse of funding for a wall at the U.S./Mexico border continues.
