HOUSTON and HENRY COUNTY:    Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Attorney Todd Derrick as the new Circuit Court Judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit. Derrick will replaced Judge Brad Mendheim, of which Governor Ivey appointed as an Alabama Supreme Court Justice.

Todd Derrick practices in the law firm of Bruce Hall in Dothan. At one time Derrick practiced with Attorney Warren Cobb.

Todd Derrick is from Geneva County. He played football for Alabama State Representative Donnie Cheesten during his high school days.

Todd Derrick has lived in the Rehobeth area for many years.

The appointment process took several weeks. There were several minorities, women, who applied for the vacant Circuit Judge position. When Governor Ivey was thought to be ready to appoint a Judge the interview process was re-opened. As we understand Derrick was in the first round of interviews.

At this time we do not know when Derrick will be sworn in to assume the duties of Circuit Court Judge.

The 20th Judicial Circuit is comprised of; Presiding Circuit Court Judge Larry Anderson, Circuit Court Judge Mike Conaway, Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford, Circuit Court Judge Kevin Moulton.

It is against the Alabama law for anyone over 70 years old to serve as a Circuit or District Court Judge. Current sitting Circuit Court Judge Mike Conaway is aged out for the election in June and can not seek re-election.

There are two seeking election to the Circuit Court Judgeship being vacated by Conaway, those being John John Steensland and Valerie Judah. Both are republicans and will square off in the June primary elections.

For the first time ever someone from Dothan - Houston County sits on the Alabama Supreme Court, that being Brad Mendheim. However Mendheim is having to seek election for that post in June. So we need to get behind Brad Mendheim and help ( even financially ) as he seeks the statewide election as Alabama Supreme Court Justice.
