DOTHAN: Yesterday the Dothan Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DDRA) opened the doors to E.R. Porter Hardware and welcome the public for its grand opening and ribbon cutting. E.R. Porter Hardware Company was started in 1889 and remained in the Porter family since.
It operated as the oldest business in the city of Dothan and was considered the oldest continually operating hardware store in the state of Alabama until it closed its doors in 2014. During its day, it was a place to purchase goods, do business and gather to discuss town matters. The Porter Hardware Company was established in the community as “THE” place to find anything and everything that you may need.
E.R. Porter Hardware Museum was created to honor the tradition and importance that the hardware store brought to Dothan’s city core. It will now be home to the Dothan Downtown Redevelopment Authority, as well as a downtown satellite location for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The Porter properties secured their place in history by being the center of commerce for the Wiregrass area for years,” said Pat Thomas, Board Chairman of the DDRA.
