ALABAMA:     There are probably no more states in the United States of America where the Colonel of the State Troopers is not above working.

Except for Alabama.

Charles Ward is the Colonel of the Alabama Department of Law Enforcement - Trooper Division, for the ENTIRE State of Alabama. He is a Ozark Alabama native.

Charles is a outstanding person, and a terrific law enforcement officer. He has a great work ethic.

Several months ago Colonel Ward heard Troopers in a chase in the Troy area. The Trooper vehicle assigned to him is unmarked. The suspect vehicle had a Florida license plate and the Trooper lost him.

Colonel Ward eased off on Highway 231 and then, BINGO, he spotted the suspect vehicle. Colonel Ward did not flip blue lights on. He positioned himself behind the vehicle and followed until the suspect was caught in traffic and at a traffic light at Troy. And then...to the suspects surprise...he saw Christmas Tree lights ( blue lights ) light up behind him.

EXPERIENCE...patience and studying your prey. Knowing the out of state license plates the suspect had to make it back to Highway 231.

Last year a tragic wreck in Dale County but in the City Limits of Dothan. Colonel Ward was on the scene within minutes of the call being dispatched.

Last week in Dale County, the small stretch of Dale County between Coffee and Geneva County, a shooting. Colonel Charles Ward was on the scene in about 10 minutes from the call being dispatched.

Colonel Ward fulfills his duties statewide. He manages the Alabama Department of Law Enforcement - Trooper Division from his office in Montgomery. But Colonel Ward also manages from the field.

Almost daily you can hear on the Trooper Radio " DPS 1 to Dothan, 10-8". He is saying to the communications, Colonel Charles Ward is on duty and available.

I can imagine being the head man in charge of a statewide organization such as the Alabama State Troopers is a huge undertaking. But it is refreshing to know that you can look around and there is Charles Ward. It is also refreshing to know that power has not made Charles Ward rise above his calling - and that is of a law enforcement officer. There is a lot of politics and meeting people in his job.

But he is also not above working being not just an Administrator, but a Indian - working.

Alabama is lucky to have Charles Ward commanding the Alabama Department of Law Enforcement - Trooper Division.
