Headland Tradition - Well It Has Entered The Danger Zone Where Gunfire Tonight

HEADLAND:    Tonight kids from the Headland Schools were following a tradition - rolling people's yards.

Out off Highway 134 West of Headland there were several series of gunfire. Some 9 to 10 shots were fired followed by a second series of gunshots being fired.

Some kids had parked down the road and run along the railroad tracks and were rolling people's yards with toilet paper.

Years ago this was a harmless tradition. But today that tradition has become dangerous. And tonight in Headland Alabama, it became dangerous. This issue has been escalating for several days until now some homeowners have fired shots.

No, not thinking it was children pulling pranks, but homeowners hearing people in their yards at 9 PM at night messing around their homes and cars.

While he was found not guilty, remember the Florida George Zimmerman case? Someone is going to get hurt.

Some parents do not see any harm and this is a tradition. Well, I agree at one point and time in life there was no harm. But guess what? There is harm today. A society the older generation ( you and I ) have created and allowed to be created, has made it dangerous for the children.

Your child could end up in a casket. Time for this to stop before someone gets hurt.

I have woke parents up and delivered death messages. I have seen the pain and suffering on parents faces and their lives and world turned upside down because their child got killed. Seen it first hand. And it could happen in split seconds.

And I would not be doing my job if I did not sound the warning siren. THIS TRADITION HAS BECOME DANGEROUS, and as a parent it is your sole responsibility to get it stopped. Not the school officials but you as a parent. And if your child should be the one injured or killed, it will be your fault for not putting a stop to it.

Kids...I apologize that we have a society that limits pranks. I had rather have you doing the toilet paper then out drinking. But the reality of it is, it has become dangerous being in someone's yard and tonight someone could have gotten injured or killed.

So please, STOP IT.

I do not live in Headland. I received multiple calls about it recently and tonight received calls about the gunshots and law enforcement responding out Highway 134. I responded and was on the scene. I saw first hand how the situation is getting dangerous. And how some parents say it is just a prank. And it is just a prank. But it has entered the danger zone now.

At Dothan High School a tradition of rolling a large tree. See no problem with it, at school not a residence where a home owner will fire a weapon. It could be a homeowner that has been the victim of a burglary or an assault, you never know. They could be someone who lives alone and fearful at dark. You never know.

So please...before someone gets hurt, STOP. Kids be creative and start a new tradition. Let the Police Chief know that you are going to roll the square. Not a residence. Hey, the Headland Mayor could let ya'll roll him! Come on Ray! Not his house but roll Ray himself...
