Found this article on WDHN and wanted to share: The sound of bells symbolizes the start of the Christmas season for many. The bells most commonly heard are those of the Salvation Army workers helping to raise money during the Red Kettle Bell Fundraiser.

"The history of the red kettle started in 1891 when Captain Joseph McFee, a young Salvation Army officer, was asked to host a holiday meal for over 500 families," said Captain Chris Bryant, Corps Officer for the Wiregrass area.

Captain McFee immediately said yes he would host the dinner, but was unsure of how he would pay for it.

"He remembered a fundraiser they used to do over in England called "Samson's pot."  They would just put a cooking kettle out and people would throw their change in.  So he did that in San Francisco, he put it out by the dock area and by the end of Christmas he had not just enough money to feed 500, but enough to feed over a thousand families," said Bryant.

This continues today as the longest running non-profit fundraiser in history and has become a symbol of the holiday season for many around the world.

"I hear it every year people will stop me and say it is now Christmas I have heard the Salvation Army bells," said Bryant.
