BONIFAY, FLA. – Holmes County Sheriff John Tate and other law enforcement and judicial system representatives gave several Poplar Springs students a first-hand look at the judicial process on Thursday. Junior and Senior American Government and American History students sat in as Judge Luke Taylor presided over first appearance court proceedings.
After court adjourned, Judge Taylor spoke about the judicial process, and Sheriff Tate spoke about the importance of wise decisions, especially when it comes to drinking, drugs, or distracted driving. “Simply put, make good choices,” Sheriff Tate told the teens.
“Bad decisions often equal bad consequences, which can range from preventing you from getting a future job to the loss of a life.” Students also heard more about how local government works from Property Appraiser Bryan Bell, Tax Collector Harry Bell, Clerk of Court Kyle Hudson, and a representative for Supervisor of Elections Debbie Wilcox Morris.
Following the courthouse visit, students traveled to the Holmes County Jail where Jail Administrator Captain Mike Moore and Corporal Kathy Edwards took them on a walk-through and spoke to students about what daily life is like for jail inmates
