COTTONWOOD, Ala. (WDHN) — A man believed to be responsible for a home invasion in Walton County has been found at a home in Cottonwood.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release that Richard Kelley, 36, allegedly entered a Freeport woman's home on Oct. 16 while wielding a knife and hammer, assaulting her. Kelley had reportedly helped the victim change a flat tire on Highway 331 less than 24 hours before he broke into her home.

The sheriff's office and other law enforcement agencies worked on finding the person responsible for the attack, tracing the suspect to Houston County.

Before 2:00 a.m. Thursday, authorities determined that Kelley, now residing in Cottonwood, was the suspect and had changed his appearance by cutting and dyeing his hair. Deputies safely took him into custody and admitted him into the Houston County Jail at 9:11 a.m., as shown in the jail's online inmate roster.
