How Alabama school officials decide when to close for weather

Every one of Alabama's 137 K-12 public school districts closed on Wednesday, but making the decision to close is never easy, superintendents said.


What do school officials have to consider when making that decision? At the top of the list is considering the safety and well-being of students and employees, superintendents from Mobile, Jefferson and Madison County told AL.com on Wednesday.


Road conditions are usually the primary factor in whether or not to delay or close schools, Jefferson County Superintendent Dr. Craig Pouncey said. "Our concern is," he said, "when you've got over 20,000 students being transported on 450 school buses are what are the road conditions going to be?"
