HOUSTON COUNTY:      Inmates in the Houston County Jail as of September 12, 2018. There are 1319 criminal offenses for the 359 persons in the county jail.


Some of those listed have been convicted and awaiting sentencing or have been sentenced and awaiting transport to the Alabama State Prisons.


Some are awaiting trials or court appearances in court.


Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza is in charge of the Houston County Jail. As per state law the Sheriff of the county is the person who is responsible for the county jail.


The only other jail in Dothan - Houston County is the Dothan City Jail. They only hold persons arrested by Dothan Police Department on misdemeanor offenses. Anyone Dothan Police arrest on a felony begin the jail journey at Dothan City Jail but are required by law to be transferred to the county jail. Once there the person either makes bond or remains in jail pending a court appearance.


The jail commander is James Brazier. He started in the Houston County Sheriff Reserve Deputy program in 1992 and full time with Houston County Sheriff Department in 1997. Brazier was Assistant Jail Commander for about 8 years and was promoted to Jail Commander by Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza. Brazier has been in that position for about two years.


The average jail population is about 380 inmates.


The Houston County District Court has a closed circuit TV system for initial appearances and certain court appearances. On a daily basis the Houston County Jail has to transport many inmates to and from the jail to the courthouse for appearances in District and Circuit Court. A huge task in maintaining the safety and security of the inmate and public and maintaining a tight schedule to have the inmates in court on time.


However, if you are in the Houston County Jail and have a court appearance in Dothan Municipal Court the system does not transport you for those court appearances. Dothan issues arrest warrants for you for failure to appear.
