As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Alabama is under a state of emergency declared by Gov. Kay Ivey due to a tropical system moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the statement issued by the governor's office, the National Weather Service has warned that rain from the system will create a potential for significant flash flooding. The potential is higher close to the coast but could affect the entire state given the scope of the weakly organized but large storm system.
"Based on the forecast and prediction of the National Weather Service Offices for Alabama, residents need to start preparing for widespread rain totals of 4 to 8 inches with isolated areas of greater than 10 inches possible through Thursday," Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Art Faulkner said in the release issued by the governor's office. "Being prepared for potential flood conditions is critical, because flash flooding can be a very dangerous situation."
