On July 28, 2018, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Jackson Hospital in response to a reported sexual assault. During an interview with JCSO Investigators the victim stated that she was driving her car near Vernon, FL (Washington County) during the evening hours of July 27, 2018 when she heard a noise coming from her back seat.
When she turned around to see what it was she observed her ex-boyfriend, Clay Dewitt Brunson, climbing into her back seat from the trunk compartment of her car. As she began to confront him, Brunson struck her in the head with his fist and the two began to struggle over control of the vehicle. During the altercation Brunson was able to overtake her and take physical control of her car.
Brunson refused to stop the car and let the victim out of the car. Brunson continued driving the car at a high rate of speed, traveling into Jackson County and eventually to his residence in Marianna. Once at his residence he forced the victim into his bedroom where he repeatedly struck and sexually assaulted the victim throughout the night. Brunson eventually fell asleep around 5:00 a.m. giving the victim an opportunity to escape. The victim then drove directly to Jackson Hospital for medical assistance.
The victim did sustain physical injuries that were consistent with her recollection of events.
When Deputies attempted contact with Brunson he had already left his residence and his whereabouts are currently unknown. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has obtained arrest warrants for Brunson for the following charges:
Sexual Battery
False Imprisonment
This investigation is still on going, with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the States Attorney’s Office of the 14th Circuit. Further charges are pending at this time.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Brunson is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at (850)482-9648 or Chipola Crimestoppers at (850)526-5000.
