On March 24, 2018 a Deputy Sheriff with the Uniform Patrol Division was on patrol in the area of Hwy 231 and Dilmore Road in Cottondale, Florida. While on patrol, the Deputy observed a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Upon the Deputy making contact with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Maurice Elder, he smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the interior of the vehicle. The Deputy also smelled a strong odor of perfume that is believe to have just been sprayed within the vehicle.

A probable cause search of the vehicle from the odor of marijuana revealed the following: underneath the driver's seat, a small plastic wrapper was located. The wrapper contained an amount of a crystallized substance presumed to be methamphetamine. The substance was field tested which returned favorable results for the substance being methamphetamine. Throughout the vehicle, items of drug paraphernalia were located along with a large air sealed plastic bag that when opened smelled strongly of marijuana. In the glove compartment, two loaded firearms were located.  In the rear seat of the vehicle, a partial burnt marijuana cigarette was recovered. A large quantity of ammunition was concealed within the trunk of the vehicle.

During the course of the traffic stop, it was learned that Elder is a convicted felon. It was also learned that the front seat passenger, Cassandra Davis, had an active warrant for her arrest out of Houston County, Alabama. Once Davis was secured in the rear of the Deputy's patrol vehicle, Davis was observed making several movements. Once contact was made with Davis, several “shards” of methamphetamine was observed scattered on the patrol vehicle's seat. The suspected methamphetamine was subsequently recovered and field tested which returned favorable results for the substance being methamphetamine or “ICE”.

A search of Elder's person revealed $1,300 in cash. The cash was in sequential bills, which is conducive with the sell or distribution of illegal narcotics.

At the conclusion of the traffic stop, Maurice Elder and Cassandra Davis were placed under arrest and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
