A DUI driver caused two crashes on Interstate 65 in northern Jefferson County Thursday morning, including one that injured a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.
The first crash happened at 5:10 a.m. on I-65 northbound near the 271 mile marker when the intoxicated motorist – identified by Alabama State Troopers as 35-year-old Dejuan Dawson- lost control of his vehicle while he was traveling at a high rate of speed. Dawson’s vehicle left the roadway, struck the median guardrail, re-entered the interstate and crashed into a semi tanker truck.
Alabama State Trooper Cp. Steve Smith said Dawson’s vehicle came to a final rest in the middle of the dark roadway.
