On 01/24/2019 at approximately 9:56 am an officer with the Marianna Police Department observed a tan in color, 2006 Toyota passenger car bearing Florida registration JKGE82 traveling on Penn Avenue. The vehicle was exceeding the posted speed limit, traveling 60mph within a 45mph speed zone.
A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. Shaquille Griffin was identified, by his Florida driver’s license, as the driver of the vehicle. The officer detected the odor of Marijuana emanating from the vehicle. As the officer requested Griffin to exit the vehicle, based on the odor, Griffin became agitated. Griffin refused several instructions to exit the vehicle. As officers attempted to remove Griffin from the vehicle, Griffin accelerated from the scene. This action caused an officer’s arm to become pinned in the vehicle. The officer was drug a short distance before being thrown to the ground.
Officers immediately pursued Griffin. He was located at Cottondale Village Apartments, in the area of building #12. Griffin again refused to comply with lawful commands given by officers. After a short time, Griffin was taken into custody. During an inventory of Griffin’s vehicle, 7 grams of a green plant like substance was located in the vehicle. The substance tested positive for the presence of marijuana.
Shaquille Griffin was transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility, to await his appearance before the court. The officer, involved in the traffic stop, sustained minor injuries. The officer was treated at Jackson Hospital and returned to duty.
