MOBILE COUNTY, AL (WALA) -35-year-old John Alexander Betancourt didn't have anything to say on his way to metro jail Sunday.
Mobile Police said Saturday, he took off with a 7-week-old baby girl in a 2003 Cadillac Escalade setting off a statewide Amber Alert.
"We had a female pick up a male stranger on the service road. Both of them went to Burlington Coat Factory. She was stopped for possible shoplifting and detained. At the time, she had the suspect go to the car with the child. After about 15 minutes of being detained by Burlington, no charges were filed. She was released. She goes outside and realizes the child and the car is gone," Cpl. Laderrick DuBose with Mobile Police said.
Authorities and the community searched for Betancourt for hours. Then, a tip around 7 Sunday morning led investigators right to that black Escalade at an apartment complex on Old Pascagoula Rd.
