NEW Email acknowledges it’s time for Canary to go

NOTE:    BCA ( Business Council Of Alabama ) was once a powerful organization controlling much of Alabama Politics. Also Billy Canary’s wife, Leura, was a Federal Prosecutor. She was involved in the federal prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.

The Canary’s character has been under question for a long time.

BCA was happy for a long time because he carried their water and made certain groups tons of money.

Something it appears some still want by delaying the departure of Canary.

As discussion continues to heat up over embattled Business Council of Alabama’s C.E.O. Billy Canary’s future desperation, deception and political wrangling are playing out in real-time. In hopes of saving his position, Canary is even misleading the committee about his relationship with Alabama’s senior U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, suggesting he has Shelby’s support to remain at BCA.

Earlier this week, the Alabama Political Reporter was given access to the content of an email that confirms executive committee members agree that Canary should be replaced. The only question remaining is when.

During an April 10 executive committee meeting, seven of the state’s largest corporations laid down an ultimatum: either Canary goes, or they do. This ultimatum was not a hastily drawn conclusion but the result of years of watching the organization’s reputation being damaged by Canary’s leadership.

Leura Garrett Canary was the United States Attorney for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. She is married to career Republican activist William (Bill) Canary.

She graduated from Huntingdon College in 1978 and later attended law school at University of Alabama.^[1] Before becoming a US Attorney "Leura had been a career litigator, beginning as a civil litigator in the office of the attorney general for the State of Alabama."^[1] Canary was nominated for Alabama Middle District US Attorney General by George W. Bush on August 2, 2001, and confirmed by the United States Senate on November 6, 2001.

She has come under scrutiny concerning the prosecution of Don Siegelman, a former Democratic Alabama Governor, for conflicts of interest. She eventually recused herself, and turned the prosecution over to her assistant, Middle District US Attorney Franklin.^[2]

On June 1, 2007^[3] it became public knowledge that a Republican activist, lawyer Dana Jill Simpson of Rainsville, Alabama, filed a sworn statement suggesting Leura Canary was directed to use her office for political purposes.

Recently, as part of a broader national investigation into the Department of Justice, Congress requested documents related to the prosecution of former Governor Don Siegelman due July 28, 2007. These would include the recusal papers of Leura Canary. The DOJ has not yet complied with this request.^[4]
