DOTHAN:    It has been one year since former Dothan City Manager Mike West gave the Mayor and Dothan Commissioners his notice to retire at the end of year 2018.

The clock ticked. But the Mayor and Dothan Commissioners had not hired a City Manager.

Former Dothan Mayor Alfred Saliba served as Acting City Manager when Dothan was without one.

Former Chester Sowell and then Dothan Police Chief John White mixed like oil and water. During Sowell's tenure Police Chief John White found the Mayor could not serve as Acting City Manager.

That is how Jerry Corbin always ended up as Acting City Manager from that point forward. Corbin has since retired.

So when December 30, 2018 rolled around and no City Manager, a deal was cut by the Mayor and Dothan Commissioners to contract with Mike West. The contract was for West to work part time as City Manager until April 30.

It is the end of February. The clock is ticking and no City Manager yet. No updates by Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba or the Dothan City Commission.

This past weekend Dothan had a meeting for upcoming plans. One of those is an Assistant City Manager. But they do not want to hire an Assistant until they get a City Manager in place.

That succession plan should have already been in place. But that would require forward thinking.

So where are we on hiring a Dothan City Manager? This person yields an enormous amount of power over 1,000 employees of the City of Dothan, and the citizens of Dothan. So does the citizens have a right to know where we are?
